The Commission enhanced capacities of its commissioners and staff

From 6-8 November 2024, the Commission organized a 3-day training workshop that brought together 38 of its Commissioners and staff, on monitoring and reporting of human rights violations and prevention of torture and ill-treatment. The purpose of the training workshop was to help Commissioners and staff to more effectively implement the mandate of protecting human rights and preventing torture, by equipping the Commission’s commissioners and staff with the essential skills, knowledge, and technical strategies needed to handle human rights violations, prevent torture, and effectively report on these issues.

The training came out of a reinforced collaborative effort between the National Commission for Human Rights, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to build the capacity of the Commissioners and the staff of the Commission especially on monitoring and reporting human rights violations and prevention of torture and other forms of ill-treatment. 

The session engaged participants on discussions around international and regional human rights protection mechanisms, core international human rights instruments as well as mechanisms of reporting human rights violation and prevention of torture and ill-treatment.

At the end of the training, Enhanced capabilities of NPM members in conducting effective investigations, monitoring and reporting human rights violations were enhanced; reporting mechanisms leading to actionable recommendations and effectiveness in preventing torture and degrading treatment through strategic oversight were improved. Moreover, knowledge and skills on international human rights protection and torture preventive mechanisms were increased.
