Rwanda joined the world to celebrate International Human Rights Day
Every year, on 10 December, the International Community celebrates the International Human Rights Day to honor the UN General Assembly’s adoption and declaration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on 10th December 1948, a milestone document that proclaims the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being without any discrimination.
This year, Rwanda joined the international community in celebrating this day that had a two-fold focus which was the 76th anniversary of the UDHR and the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of the National Commission for Human Rights of Rwanda (NCHR). Under the international theme "Our Rights, Our Future. Right now".
The celebration day was preceded by human rights awareness raising activities with a great emphasis on Rwanda achievements in human rights promotion and protection, which led to country peaceful and prospering society being governed by the rule of Law.
The Commission conducted a human rights week that was launched on 1st December 2024, during the Car Free Day, aiming at promoting and raising awareness of human rights. The awareness was also conducted in secondary schools and higher learning institutions in Southern Province, and outreach activities in Western Province.
The Commission also organised a national conference on 10th December 2024 on “Advancement of human rights in Rwanda: 25 years of fostering a culture of human rights ", to reflect on the Commission journey in 25 years since its establishment, celebrate achievements, and recommit to advancing human rights for all Rwandans.
All the activities were conducted as planned and an understanding of the legacy, relevance and activism of the UDHR through human rights week activities and the celebration of the UDHR anniversary were enhanced and highlighted.
