On 9th December 2023, Rwanda joined the world to celebrate the International Human Rights Day. The celebration took place in Mayange Sector, Bugesera District under the theme “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All”. The objective of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the International Human Rights Day was to raise awareness of the population on human rights as led out by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and encourage duty-bearers to respect human rights while fulfilling their duties.
The celebration was preceded by a Human Rights Campaign which was marked by different human rights awareness activities engaging the community in promoting human rights encompassed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This campaign started on 03rd December, 2023 and ended on 10th December 2023.
Different activities promoting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights universality, forging its future and supporting the State and all relevant actors’ engagement were planned. They were conducted in partnership with the Rwanda One UN, the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights in Rwanda, Public institutions and Civil Society Organizations operating in the field of human rights and the National Commission for Human Rights.
In Rwanda, this celebration was an opportunity to take stake of key achievements of the country in promoting human rights, communicate national human rights priorities for the coming years as well as engaging all stakeholders in supporting the country’s initiatives with regard to promote and protect human rights.
