NCHR promotes human rights, steps up fight against teenage pregnancy in schools

The National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) has launched a week-long awareness campaign in high schools to promote human rights, with a special focus on child rights and the prevention of teenage pregnancy.

The campaign, running from May 11 to 15, 2026, is being conducted in schools across the districts of Musanze, Nyabihu, Rwamagana, Kayonza, and Muhanga.

Teenage pregnancy remains a growing concern in Rwanda and globally. According to the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR), the rate of teenage pregnancy among girls aged 15 to 19 rose from 5% in 2020 to 8% in 2025, highlighting the urgent need for stronger prevention efforts.

During the campaign, students are being sensitized on human rights, particularly children’s rights, the root causes of risky sexual behavior, the impact of teenage pregnancy on children’s rights, and their role in promoting child protection and preventing early pregnancy.

The initiative forms part of NCHR’s broader mandate to educate and raise public awareness on human rights through schools, community outreach, and other public engagement platforms. Protect human rights, prevent teenage pregnancy.
