The National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) on Friday, May 29, 2026, joined residents of Rubavu District and survivors in Kwibuka32 commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi at Bigogwe Genocide Memorial Site.

The commemoration was held under the theme “Kwibuka Twiyubaka” (Remember–Unite–Renew), highlighting Rwanda’s continued journey of remembrance, unity, and resilience.

The event brought together NCHR Commissioners and staff, local leaders, survivors, and community members of Rubavu and Nyabihu Districts to honor the victims and reflect on the importance of protecting human rights and preserving national unity.

Participants paid tribute to the victims through a wreath-laying ceremony and a moment of silence at the memorial site, where more than 9,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi are laid to rest.

Bigogwe Genocide Memorial Site, located in Kanzenze Sector, Rubavu District, preserves the memory of thousands of victims killed in the former communes of Mutura and Rwerere.

Speakers emphasized the importance of keeping the memory of the Genocide against the Tutsi alive, strengthening the fight against genocide ideology, and promoting human rights as a foundation for sustainable peace.

A survivor also shared testimony on the atrocities committed during the genocide and the long journey of healing and rebuilding.

NCHR reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national efforts to ensure that the Genocide against the Tutsi never happens again. Remember–Unite–Renew.
