Human rights priorities set through National Dialogue on Human Rights

The Ministry of Justice in collaboration with the Commission and One UN Rwanda
organized a National Dialogue on Human Rights in the framework of Human Rights 75
Initiative which was expected to identify human rights priorities and trigger the flagship
pledges. The main objective of the national dialogue was to enable stakeholders’
consultation in the context of Human Rights 75 Initiative whose key objective among
others was to generate pledges that bring about concrete change towards greater
enjoyment of human rights for all.
The meeting was in the context of this year’s celebration where the Office of the United
Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has launched a year-long initiative that
culminated in a high-level event in December, 2023.

One of the key objectives of the Human Rights 75 Initiative was for UN Member States
to organize country dialogues to discuss national human rights priorities through which
human rights pledges would be designed.

The meeting came up with 5 pledges aiming at promoting and protecting human rights.
The pledges are expected to bring about concrete change towards greater enjoyment of

human rights for all from State institutions (executive, legislative and judicial
authorities), local and regional authorities, regional organizations, national human rights
institutions, civil society organisations, UN entities, international financial institutions,
business, young people and others.
Those pledges are transformative, innovative and catalytic, with significant impact on the
enjoyment of human rights in Rwanda.

The national dialogue gathered high level representatives from Government, Judiciary,
Parliament, National Commission Human Rights, Civil Society Organizations, Law
enforcement and Security organs, United Nations, Development Partners, Trade Unions,
University and Higher Learning Institutions and Media.
