The United States of America Ambassador to the Republic of Rwanda, Her Excellence Erica J. Barks-Ruggles was received by Ms NIRERE Madeleine the Chairperson and Commissioners of the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR), this 19th March 2015.
They held talks on the organization, mission and the functioning of the National Commission for Human Rights/ Rwanda. The Chairperson of the NCHR congratulated her for her new appointment as the Ambassador to the Republic of Rwanda; she welcomed and wished her success during her mission in Rwanda.
In their discussions, they put a great emphasis on the role played by the NCHR in promoting and protecting human rights in Rwanda and how it collaborates with the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and international NGOs especially those operating in human rights area.
The Chairperson of the NCHR stated that it was an opportunity to look forward to strengthening the cooperation between the NCHR and the United States Embassy in Rwanda in promotion and protection of human rights in the country.
Her Excellence Erica J. Barks-Ruggles explained the contribution of the US Department of State in promotion and protection of human rights all around the World in general, and especially in Rwanda. She commended the Government of Rwanda’s efforts in the promotion and protection of women’s rights, especially for their integration in decision making organs. She was also pleased by the education of human rights in schools and wished that human rights curricula should be developed for all schools.
She welcomed the NCHR’s efforts towards the promotion and protection of human rights and wished its actions could reach the population at large, so as to eradicate human rights violations. She saluted the powers and responsibilities of the NCHR and assured the collaboration between both institutions in promoting and protecting human rights in Rwanda.
